What started it?
- On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched large-scale air strikes on Iran.

- The biggest shock: They killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (the most powerful person in Iran for over 35 years) right at the start, along with many generals and officials. This was a huge blow to Iran’s leadership.
Why did the US and Israel attack?
- Long-standing tensions: Iran has a nuclear program (the West fears it’s for weapons), supports groups like Hezbollah (fighting Israel), and has attacked or threatened US/Israeli interests before.
- The US (under President Trump) and Israel said this was to stop Iran’s threats, end its nuclear ambitions, and possibly push for regime change (overthrow the current government).
- Trump called it “Operation Epic Fury” and said the “big wave” of attacks is still coming.
How is Iran responding?
