With only a few weeks left until March 31, 2026, Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan have a final opportunity to make important changes to their healthcare coverage during the annual Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP).
This limited window, running from January 1 to March 31 each year, allows current Medicare Advantage enrollees to:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan (with or without prescription drug coverage).
- Drop their Medicare Advantage plan entirely and return to Original Medicare (Parts A and B), with the option to add a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
Key restrictions to note:
- This period is only available to people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1, 2026 (it does not apply to those in Original Medicare only, Medical Savings Accounts, cost plans, or PACE programs).
- You can make only one change during this window.
- Any approved change takes effect on the first day of the following month (e.g., a switch made in mid-March would start April 1, 2026)
Why act before the deadline?
Many enrollees review their plans after receiving their Annual Notice of Changes (ANOC) and discover network shifts, higher copays, new benefits (or reduced ones), or better options for their medications and doctors. Missing the March 31 cutoff means no further changes are possible until the next Annual Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7, 2026), unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a qualifying life event.
